AKA Chapter 3: Club Hopping

Shinn hurried  back home, his mind racing about the events of his first day. Things had gone without a hitch, so for now, he thought things may go smoothly from here on in. All he had to do was keep doing what he did today, and he was set. Now he just needed some advice on just how to do that. Turning down the path, he soon arrived home and hurried in, finding his aunt waiting, along with the triplets.

“Okay, how'd it go? Did your disguise work? Did anyone see your underwear this time? Any cute girls in your class?” Questions were being fired off so rapidly he couldn't almost process it all.

“Whoa, whoa, what is this, a press conference? Let me get in at least.” He closed the door and sighed. “Okay, everything went all right. Yes, the disguise is working, a bit too much in the case of one of my classmates. No, I did all I could to avoid that. And the girls...they're nice looking.”

“Ooh, nice. But the disguise is working too much? What does that mean?” Kazumi asked.

“Well, let's say I got a classmate that really likes these.” Shinn pointed to his false breasts. “And I got another that seems jealous of them.”

Midori chuckled. “You ought to be proud, Kazumi.”

“Hey, are you forgetting just who was the model for them?” Beniko huffed.

Reiko and the triplets then all gave hearty laughs, while Shinn mustered a mild chuckle. “Yeah, so, everything went pretty good today. Um, anyway, if you'll excuse me, I'm just gonna go change and wash up.” He shuffled out of the living room and to his bedroom.

Inside, he set his backpack down and stretched. Shinn began to about disrobe, when it was then he spotted a stack of various more clothes, tops, skirts, pants, shoes, all at the foot of his bed. Atop it was a purse. He picked it up, looking it over. “Aunt Reiko, what's with all these clothes right here?”

“We found you some more clothes, just in case you'd need to go out as Emi.”

Shinn snorted. Like he'd ever go out in public as Emi outside of school. There wasn't a need for it, nor would there ever be. Shrugging, he tossed the purse aside. He finished changing into a robe and made his way to the bathroom to remove his colored contacts and wash out the dye from his hair.

“Yep, I got it all figured out.” he thought to himself, “Just go to class and get home as fast as possible everyday and I've got it made.”

Once done washing, he finished changing, and went to complete the homework he had assigned for the that. The triplets stayed for most of the evening, sharing various tips with Shinn and offering any advice should he need any. Shinn paid mild attention to it, given his set plan and much of it felt like a refresher course of his time “training” under them.

Before bed, he set his clothes once again for the day ahead. “Yeah, this is going to be a breeze, I think.”

When morning arrived, he went through his new routine to transform into Emi, brimming with confidence. Once set, he headed for class, almost skipping along the way. Reaching the school, he quickly spotted Juri first. Hoping to not repeat any awkward moments similar to anything from the previous day, he calmly walked up to her and smiled. “Good morning, Juri.”

“Emi, how are you this morning?”

“Better than yesterday.” Shinn admitted, “I think I survived the first day jitters.”

“Juri, Emi!” They turned to see Asagi and Mayura coming over to greet them. “Nice morning, isn't it?”

“Big day today. Everyone ready?”

Shinn was suddenly surprised. It was only the second day, so what big event could it possibly be?

“Club Enrollment Day, I've been preparing for it.” Juri said.

“What Clubs are you joining?” Asagi asked.

Juri shrugged. “I've got a couple in mind, and I'm sure Giselle will be right behind.”

“Really, why's that?” Shinn questioned.

“Oh, it's just something she done for years.” Juri answered, “I sign up for something and usually there she is right behind me.”

“Me and Asagi got our picks ready.” Mayura smirked, “So, Emi, what Clubs are you wanting to join?”

“Well, I really wasn't planning on any.” Shinn replied, but then the trio all looked baffled by his comment.

“But you have to join at least one.” Juri told him.

“What?”

“Yeah, it's one of the requirements of attending this academy. Didn't you know that?”

“Um, I must've missed that...” Shinn felt nervous, whatever confidence he had before this moment dashed. How could he have missed that detail? Was it an oversight, his aunt forgetting to mention it, or a loss among the shuffle of everything he had to do to prepare his charade? More importantly, what was he going to do?

“Well then, seems you didn't pay enough attention.” Everyone looked to see Giselle and her cohorts standing close, listening in on their conversation.

“You know, Giselle, if there ever was to be an eavesdropping club, you'd be perfect as the head of it.” Juri muttered.

Giselle didn't reply in any way, simply turned and walked away, Fuu and Rina following.

“Oh man, I didn't think of this.” Shinn said, “What am I suppose to do?”

“Relax, there's a lot of clubs to pick from.” Mayura said, “I'm sure there's one that you'd like.”

“Here.” Asagi handed him a piece of paper, “It's a list of the active clubs. I'm signed up for Yoga Club myself, and Mayura is signing up for Soccer Club. Maybe one of those you work for you?”

“Um...” Shinn murmured, “Maybe. Can I keep this list?”

“Sure, by all means, anything to help you.”

The school bell rang, signaling the students to head for their homerooms. As they marched in, Shinn stuffed the list into his vest. He needed to look closely and hope he could find something. Once in homeroom, he went to his desk, his thoughts awash with concerns of this new development. It added complications to his initial plan, could he maintain his disguise while engaging in club activities?

Miss Furinji arrived and the class stood at attention and bowed, their teach greeting everyone with her smile. “Good morning, class, how are we on our second day? I know today is important, so I hope everybody’s got clubs picked out. Wouldn't want to see anyone have to be expelled.” The strange aura of menace once more surrounded her, but was gone as quickly as it had arrived. “Now then, let's start with roll-call, shall we?”

Throughout the day, classes progressed on, all the while Shinn shifting his focus on them and the situation of having to enroll in a club by the end of the day. He couldn't peek at the list Asagi handed him so didn't have much time to go over what was available.

“Miss Hinomoto? Miss Hinomoto!”

Shinn looked up to see the face of his science teacher, Mr. Danjou Shirahama, pointing to him. “Yes?”

“Do you know the answer?”

Shinn realized he had missed a question directed to him and felt more nervousness. There were a few quick giggles and Shinn bit his lower lip. “I'm sorry, what was it again, Mr. Shirahama?”

The teacher sighed. “I know this is just my second day of teaching ever, but I certainly hope I am not already boring my students.”

“Oh no, sir, you're not.” Shinn said.

“All right then, so can you tell me what 'fauna and flora' mean?”

“Animals and plants?”

Mr. Shirahama smiled and nodded. “Correct. Now continuing with the topic...”

Shinn paid attention to the rest of the lesson, but knowing every passing minute was closer to possible expulsion from school. At lunch, he finally had a little more time to look over the list while he ate. He skimmed through, looking what clubs were available.

Cheerleading Club: Might be good exercise, but the idea of jumping around in a skirt really didn't sit well with him.

Belly Dance Club: Surprisingly there actually such a club here. That was a steadfast “no”, not liking the idea of wearing revealing dancing clothes and shaking what his aunt and her friends had providied him.

Swim Club: Possibly doable, except for the fear of losing one if not both of his false breasts while in the water.

Kendo Club: Might be fun, if not for getting battered with a stick.

Juri, Asagi, and Mayura looked over at his studying of the list.

“Any luck?” Asagi asked.

“No, there's nothing I really like or think I'd be good at.” Shinn said. “Hey, Juri, what were you joining?”

“Gardening Club.” Juri answered, “But Giselle is also there.”

Shinn sighed. That might've been a chance for him, though he knew nothing about plants. What's more, the fact Giselle was there as well was reason enough for him to not join. Still, with Juri there, it may be be so bad.

“I just hope she doesn't try sabotaging anything I try growing.” Juri suddenly said, “I wouldn't put it past her.”

Shinn groaned. “Aw, and she doesn't like me, for whatever reason, so that's out of the question. I want to avoid her all I can.”

“Afraid I'd outclass you, transfer student?”

Shinn and the others turned to see Giselle standing by, the same stern expression on her face. “So, any Clubs picked?”

“Why do you care, Giselle?” Mayura.

“I don't, but I thought I'd be courteous and give fair warning if we happened to be in any clubs together, don't be too shocked when I outclass anything you hope to accomplish.”

“Right...”

“And I could offer a few suggestions. If you're not afraid of taking a lashing, Fuu is part of Kendo Club and I'm sure would go easy, but not too easy on you. Or if you'd rather, I'm sure Rina can suggest any of the science based classes to you, given your little moment of drawing a blank earlier today.”

“You know, Giselle, why don't you...” Juri started, but Shinn stopped her.

“Thank you, Class Rep, for your suggestions, I will take them into account.”

“Hmm, best of luck then.” Giselle left and joined Fuu and Rina already seated at a nearby table.

“Never mind her, I'm sure you'll find one.”

“I hope so.” Shinn weighed his options, and seeking out help from Fuu and Rina could be a way out. Then again, if they were anything like Giselle, or acting under her directions, they'd may make his school life miserable.

The rest of the day went along without any real incidents. School was nearly done, but Shinn still didn't have any picks made. He paced along the halls, trying to figure out what could be done. Should there be nothing done, perhaps he could speak with the principle about the matter. She did make the suggestion of starting a karate club. However, he was unsure of that idea.

“Oh, what I am going to do?” he wondered.

“Hi, welcome to the Cosplay Club, where cosplay is about the character, not just the costume.”

Shinn was shook back to reality, now realizing he had wandered into a room. The girl before him, blue haired and  smiled brightly. He gazed at her attire, it wasn't the normal school uniform. She instead wore a black leotard, armored silver colored plating, armored skirt, black boots and elbow length gloves, and a silver and black helmet.

“Misato Hasegawa is my name, and cosplay is my game. Now, don’t I make just the cutest Cosmic Scout?” Misato giggled.

“Um, sure, I guess.” Shinn answered.

“And whom am I addressing?”

“I'm Emi, Emi Hinomoto.” Shinn said, “So what are you exactly?”

“I'm Cosmic Scout Ranger Onyx, my favorite character.” Misato said, seemingly shocked she had to answer that. “You've never heard of Gem Ranger Pearl?”

Shinn had some knowledge of the Gem Ranger Pearl series, about a band of “cosmic powered” girls, armed with “gem weapons”, who battled evil-doers. Reiko had a nice collection of the manga and artwork, and was eager whenever episodes aired. “Oh, yeah, I see it now.” he said, “I'm kind of familiar with it, but just a little.”

“Then let me get into character, and give you some proper education.” Misato did a series of poses. “I am Cosmic Scout, Ranger Onyx! By the power of my gemstone, I will safeguard all things good, and battle all things evil!”

Shinn gave her performance a light applause. “Gee, Aunt Reiko would love this.” He thought.

Misato took off her helmet, at last giving Shinn a full look at her face. She brushed a strand of her blue hair and smiled. That's just an example of what we here in the Cosplay Club. Characters from books, TV, video games, just about anything is fair game. And of course, from time to time members have done characters of the opposite gender.”

“You mean if I joined, I wouldn't need to dress like a girl every single time?” Shinn blurted out. Right away, he thought that question would rouse suspicion, but Misato just smiled bigger.

“Sure. Though it may be a little more difficult for you to pull that off.”

Shinn knew what she meant and gave a bashful chuckle. “Uh, yeah...”

“Also, we'll usually coordinate with other clubs regarding outfits.” Misato continued. “So, you interested?”

Shinn fidgeted. “Well...” He didn't know why, but something was telling him to go forward with this route.  He'd never been too worried about any challenge, up until now with his current situation. And with cosplay, he had not one, but four people who could advice him. “All right, I'll do it.”

“Great! Always glad to have a new member!” Misato shook his hand, “I know you'll have fun here, Emi.”

“Oh, I think so.” Shinn had dealt with his nervousness about finding a club to join, but now, given the practices of this one, a new sense of nervousness came about. Hopefully he could find a way to conquer this. He filled out his name on the membership enrollment form Misato provided, which she explained she would turn in to the principle's office. “Now that it's settle, I guess I will be going.”

“Sure, remember, cosplay isn't about just the costume, it's about the character.” Misato winked, “And before you go, I just got to say, you really could pull off dressing as Gem Ranger Pearl herself.”

“Um, thanks.” Shinn said, waving as he departed. Rounding the corner, he found Juri and the others walking down the hallway.

“Hey, you find anything?” Juri asked.

“I, um, joined the Cosplay Club. Shinn told them.

“Cosplay Club? That's a nice pick.” Juri said, “I take it you've met Misato?”

Shinn nodded. “She seems nice.”

“Yeah, that gal is gaga for costuming.” Mayura smirked. “We got our stuff done too.”

“And not a moment too soon.” a new voice said, the students looking to see Principle  Miyamoto and  Miss Yoko Takashi. “I'm certain all of you will be a great service to your clubs and this school.”

“There are some interesting options, I must say.” Shinn said.

“Yes, Nobunaga High does pride itself on keeping with some traditional options, with a few the think outside the box.” The principal explained, “And I always look forward to the performances each club carries out during festivals.”

Shinn gulped. “Performances?” he thought, “Now I'm really going to need all the help I can get.”

At home, Reiko had finished jotting down notes for a new story and soon would start making dinner. Setting work aside, she stood and stretched when she heard the front door open and peered to see her nephew entering. “Hi, how was school?”

“Oh, interesting turn of events, I got to admit, it's a long story.” he said, “Hey, real quick question. What all do I need to know about Cosmic Gem Ranger Pearl?”
Third chapter of AKA, where Shinn learns that Nobunaga High has a rather unique requirement for being enrolled. Can he make a pick that's right for him, and if so, can he go through with it?
